Laboratory Supervisor
US Cannalytics is a multi-state cannabis testing lab serving the medicinal and adult-use cannabis industry. We are in search of an experienced senior scientist to join our team and help us grow our newest location in Warren, MI.
The laboratory supervisor will be responsible for all aspects of technical laboratory operations, including overseeing the quality testing and release of medical cannabis and hemp/CBD products. Our mission is to provide our customers with timely delivery of high-quality results and unparalleled service.
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Ensuring compliance with laboratory policies and procedures, state regulations, and ISO-17025 accredited quality management system
- Executing method optimization across major analytical testing (GCMSMS, LCMSMS, and ICPMS)
- Inventory management of both laboratory consumables and samples submitted for testing.
- Responsible for continuous improvement of workflow and improvements to turnaround time of test results.
- Oversight, performance, maintenance and assurance of continuous operation of analytical equipment, and as necessary, assists Laboratory Management with the selection of new or alternative instrumentation.
- Analyzes laboratory testing data for quality review as the Laboratory Director’s Designee, including the documented approval of test results and quality controls within the LIMS.
- Directs and monitors daily workflow to ensure ongoing instrument availability and completion of expected turnaround times.
- Directs and monitors subordinate staff to ensure samples are prepared and analyzed, as scheduled, and following organizational standard operating procedures.
- Provides training in sample preparation techniques and analytical methods.
- Responsible for completion and retention of personnel training records.
- Responsible for communicating patterns of non-conformance to Management.
- Provides feedback to Management for personnel performance evaluations.
- Assists Management in building and monitoring performance improvement plans.
- Oversees timely ordering, submission and successful performance of proficiency testing, including personnel participation as listed in applicable regulatory requirements.
- Designs, performs and continuously reviews applicability of technical methods and validation materials, in conjunction with Laboratory Management.
- Reviews, documents and approves small equipment verification studies.
- Designs and develops analytical equipment verification study plans.
- Designs and develops test method validation and/or validation plans.
- Calculates, summarizes and verifies acceptability of analytical limits of quantitation and control limits.
- Assists in determining and calculating Measurement of Uncertainty.
- Performs internal auditing activities of department personnel and analytical methods to ensure compliance with internal and external compliance requirements.
- Completion of appropriate non-conforming work records, including root cause analysis, as needed.
- Provides opportunities for improvement or greater efficiency.
- Performs supplementary training, as appropriate.
- Suggests revisions to existing controlled documents to increase compliance.
- Develops additional tools or resources, as needed, to support compliance.
- Serves as the laboratory’s subject-matter expert on its testing methodologies, answering questions, concerns or providing technical assistance internally across the organization, or externally, as requested by Management.
- Maintains and approves equipment records.
- Maintains consumables inventory.
- Maintains and approves reagent records, including safety and compliance records.
- Assists in developing, reviewing and updating the laboratory’s materials and workflows including but not limited to its training documents, LIMs, QMIS, eQMS and applicable seed-to-sale systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 21 years old and able to pass all state-specific requirements for cannabis employment.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license.
- A master’s level science degree in a chemical or biological science.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional (non-academic) laboratory experience in a production environment related pharmaceutical, food-sciences, or manufacturing testing.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional (non-academic) laboratory experience in a production environment accredited under a 17025-accreditation standard.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional (non-academic) of laboratory management experience in a production environment.
- Method discovery and validation experience with a minimum of GCMSMS and LCMSMS.
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel and other Office Suite programs.
- Meticulous attention to detail and ability to effectively multitask.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of chemical properties and profiles of cannabis and cannabis-specific dosage and product forms.
- Expertise in Waters LCMSMS & GCMSMS for residual solvents and/or pesticide analysis.
- Expertise in Perkin Elmer ICPMS for trace metals analysis.
Compensation:
Compensation will be based on experience and skillset and structured with incentives for meeting outlined goals.
